Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Johns was commissioned at the RAF College Cranwell in 1959 after completing flying training on Piston Provost and Meteor aircraft. Following nine years service as an operational fast-jet pilot, primarily on the Harrier, he commanded both a Harrier squadron and the Harrier Force in Germany, then became a qualified flying instructor during which time he taught The Prince of Wales to wings standard. A succession of national and NATO senior appointments followed, culminating in his promotion to Chief of the Air Staff and Air ADC to the Queen. On retirement in April 2000, he became Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle. A past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the RAF Museum, he is now president of the RAF Historical Society. His illustrious career gave him the privilege of a rare, if not singular, perspective of the RAF, our sister services and national defence matters, witnessing a steady decline in the combat power of the UK’s armed forces as financial management took precedence over identifying strategic priorities and maintaining the vital skill-set of service personnel. His views are forensic and forthright, balanced and thought-provoking and this autobiography should be essential reading for anyone interested in the development of Allied air power over the last fifty years.

The Constance Spry Cookery Book is one of the best known cookery books of all time. It is one of the kitchen bibles, worshipped by millions. This essential addition to any kitchen has withstood the test of time and become an invaluable source of information for every enthusiastic cook. Known for its authoritative and comprehensive collection of recipes, it has now been brought up to date in a beautiful new metricated edition containing specially commissioned how-to line drawings. Published in 1956, when both Constance Spry and Rosemary Hume were among the greatest names in cookery writing, it took three years to produce. Their aim was to offer a supremely practical book with chapters covering kitchen processes, soups and sauces, through vegetables, meat, poultry and game to cold dishes and pastry making. In fact everything every cook, or aspiring cook, would need to know. That the book has been so popular for over half a century is a true testament to how successfully they achieved their aim. The Constance Spry Cookbook is now an established classic (and much requested on wedding gift lists) and a timeless treasure which stands the test of time, and is perhaps even more needed today when so many people have not been taught to cook by mothers or at school.

After World War II the Royal Air Force went through a considerable downsizing, but retained an essential maritime reconnaissance role for the protection of British interests overseas. These areas were primarily the Mediterranean, Middle East, Far East to Hong Kong and all associated trade routes linking them to Britain and each other. With the arrival in service of the Shackleton from 1951, re-equipment with the new type initially concentrated on the home fleet of Coastal Command. The first overseas station to get them was Gibraltar in 1952, followed by Malta, Singapore, Aden and finally Sharjah. In addition to their daily routine of maritime patrols, the overseas squadrons took part in a number of significant operations. From dealing with rebellion in Aden, Rhodesia’s Unilateral Declaration of Independence to the Indonesian Confrontation, the Shackleton played a vital peacekeeping role. There was even a permanent detachment on the island of Gan for search-and-rescue cover for aircraft transiting to and from the Far East. The last overseas RAF Shackletons were based at Sharjah until late 1971, with a detachment from the UK remaining in Singapore until 1972. The only other operator of the type was the South African Air Force, who flew eight examples of the MR.3 from 1957. The survivors were finally withdrawn from use in November 1984. Thus, after almost thirty-three years the Shackleton’s overseas story was essentially over. Following the outstanding success of Volume 1, published in 2018 and still available, Steve Bond has garnered another exceptional group of Shack operators who delight in giving the reader their tales of derring-do. Another one for the Boys’ kitbag!

2015 would have been the year the redoubtable Marguerite Patten celebrated her 100th birthday. Sadly, she died on the 4th June 2015, just five months short of her birthday. In her honour, Grub Street is reissuing a new edition of the first book we published by Marguerite back in 1999, her comprehensive Century of British Cooking. In this book, each chapter covers one decade of the 20th century giving both history and recipes. The entire book is illustrated throughout in colour and black and white. Marguerite Patten OBE wrote over 170 cookery books, sales of which amount to over 16 million worldwide. Her long and distinguished career, which began before the war, included regular appearances on radio and television, live and televised cookery demonstrations, lectures as well as extensive journalism and authorship of books and cookery cards. Marguerite was one of Britain’s best known and loved cookery writers and has often been described as England’s Cookery Queen. Ainsley Harriott dubbed her “the cookery icon of our times”. Her Century of British Cooking pulls together her life’s work, with over 200 recipes and is truly an important work of culinary history.

Into the Blue is widely regarded as a literary classic. Originally published in 1929, and 44 years since its latest publication, Grub Street reintroduces you to Norman Macmillan’s insightful and gripping book about his experiences as a pilot during the First World War. Wing Commander Norman Macmillan, OBE, MC, AFC, DL, was born on 9 August 1892 in Glasgow. After serving sixteen months in the Highland Light Infantry, he joined the RFC in 1916. He learned to fly at Netheravon, and in 1917 went to 45 Squadron on 1½ Strutters. Norman flew many missions on this type and claimed two victories before 45 were re-equipped with Camels in August 1917; Norman then gained his first Camel victory in the same month they arrived. On 11th September he twice claimed Fokker Triplanes out of control during two separate engagements in the space of a few minutes. Macmillan went on to claim nine victories in all. After being injured in an unfortunate accident on 6th January 1918 he did not see further combat and returned to England to become a flight instructor. After his experience in the First World War, he was closely associated with flying for many years and also became an enthusiastic writer of aviation books; of which, Into the Blue is the best. In 1925 Norman was the first person to make an emergency landing at Heathrow, which was then a row of cottages. During World War Two he became wing commander war correspondent, before retiring to Cornwall, where he became Deputy Lord Lieutenant of that county. Norman died on 5 August 1976 aged 83. Norman Macmillan was decorated with the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in 1918 and was also later awarded the prestigious Air Force Cross.

Helicopter Boys is the latest addition to Grub Street’s Boys series from acclaimed author Richard Pike, exploring the role of helicopters in military and civilian situations. With over fourteen contributors, Helicopter Boys contains stories of the diverse nature of helicopter operations. From the dramatic war scenes during the Indo/Pakistani war which saw one pilot’s actions earn him a VrC gallantry award to the experience of Chinook pilots on board the Atlantic Conveyor during the Falklands War. Then there are the civilian tales from rescue missions in the Outer Hebrides to being a pilot across the world in places such as Australia and Nigeria. There is also a focus on the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 which saw the loss of 167 lives. The book ends with Pike’s experiences in Kosovo, helping to distribute emergency humanitarian aid on behalf of the United Nations World Food Programme shortly after the war ended in 1999. Each story is told with great detail conveying the action and excitement that helicopter pilots experienced with each operation. The scope, flair and pace of the writing in this book will appeal to the general reader as well as to the enthusiast.

Tornado Boys is the latest in the ever-popular ‘Boys’ series, and differs from earlier titles. With the introduction of female pilots to the RAF in 1994, the Tornado was among the first aircraft to be flown by both men and women. This is acknowledged in the book with a chapter written by one female pilot. Another aspect that makes this book different from the rest of the series is that it covers an aircraft which is still in active service, currently as a key player in Middle East operations. With focus on the GR1/GR4 versions of the Tornado (and not the F3 interceptor), readers will enjoy fascinating insights on what it is like to operate this multi-role bomber/reconnaissance aircraft against the backdrop of modern-day scenarios.
