This revised edition of Grospierre's celebrated tour of modernist architecture has been expanded beyond Europe and North America to a truly global reach, featuring buildings in Southeast Asia, Australia, Africa and South America. Featuring new and revised texts from Barbican, MoMA and independent curators, this book offers intriguing insights into the history of modernist design, the origins of architectural photography and the reasons why architectural forms repeat in otherwise dissimilar countries. Is form still function? How "modern" is modernist architecture? And what has happened to the style's foundational utopian ideals? Nicolas Grospierre's masterful photographic survey catalogues both famous and little-known buildings, challenging the viewer to consider modernist architecture's complicated legacy. Drawn from Grospierre's ever-expanding archive documenting his travels, these large-format photographs of almost 250 buildings are arranged purely by their shapes, prioritizing form over function and location to give a unique perspective of global structures. Uniform in perspective, and presented without comment, Grospierre's photographs allow viewers to discover details and colors that a more narrative-focused presentation would prohibit. The work of nearly a quarter of a century, this ever-expanding collection reflects a labor of love, a photographer's deep obsession, and a celebration of buildings both iconic and mundane all over the world.

Peter Lindbergh, one of the world’s foremost fashion photographers, celebrates the female form in this classic book. Peter Lindbergh’s Images of Women is now available in this new unabridged compact edition. Lindbergh, who passed away in 2019, took a comprehensive look at his body of work from the 1980s and ’90s and hand selected these black & white photographs of the most beautiful and famous women in the world. It was the era of the supermodels, a phenomenon he himself had helped create, and he left his own unique stamp upon it, influencing an entire generation of fashion photographers with his distinct style. Lindbergh was always interested in the aura, individuality, and personality of his models which resulted in images that captured an ideal of beauty more than just perfection and glamour. This splendid monograph represents the definitive collection of Lindbergh's considerable oeuvre: classic fashion photographs, arresting candids, portraits of female celebrities—including Madonna, Isabella Rossellini, Sharon Stone, Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling, Darryl Hannah—and of course his signature shots of the world's supermodels.

One of the most important Japanese photographers of the last century, Masahisa Fukase was known for exploring themes of isolation, lonliness, and melancholy and for his transgressive and intimate approach to the medium. This volume includes two of his last and arguably most personal series. Private Scenes features photographs taken over the course of the year 1989 in different locations around the world and in which he is both subject and photographer. He then painted over the prints with colored washes to create an entirely new piece. For this same series, he later photographed scenes from daily life, this time in Tokyo, changing camera and adding the date on his photographs, but still representing himself in the images. This volume reproduces for the first time in book form all of the photographs that make up both original series. It charts a turning point in Fukase’s work—an artist grappling with his medium and with a compulsion to share his personal experiences with his audience. The photographs are accompanied by a text by Masako Toda, who offers a contextual and historical consideration of Fukase’s œuvre.

Henri Matisse created some of his most exquisite works by cutting shapes out of paper. Delightfully entertaining and playfully inventive, his "drawings with scissors" are also a superb introduction to the most basic artistic concepts: color, line, and form. This engaging and accessible look at Matisse's cut-outs, arguably the highlight of his magnificent career, follows the artist as he goes in search of pure forms of expression. Illustrated with beautiful reproductions of Matisse's most famous works, the book relates an imaginary tale about how the colors and shapes created by Matisse come to life, carrying the reader off into the artist's fantasy world. It reflects Matisse's spontaneity, his love of bold colors, and his seemingly effortless ability to capture movement on paper, which make him an artist of great appeal to children. Fun and easy-to-follow, this exploration of Matisse's cut-outs invites children of all ages to draw with scissors just like the artist, using the sheets of paper printed in Matisse-inspired colors included in the book.

When she discovered that nearly half of France's 44,000 heritage sites were chateaux in various states of repair, Catherine Scotto embarked on a journey to find out who, exactly, lived in these medieval fortresses and, more importantly, what they were like on the inside. From Normandy to Provence and everywhere in between the owners of these chateaux-including decorators, antique dealers, artists, and collectors-represent the epitome of French culture and taste. Each chateau is presented in double-page full-color spreads that feature alluring interiors and information about the hosts and their design journeys. There's something for everyone here-whether it's homes where simplicity and minimalism reign, rooms as exuberantly busy as a 14th-century tapestry, or interiors transformed by surprising, era-bending feats. Morel's breathtaking, naturally lit photographs of generous kitchens, cozy drawing rooms, spacious bedrooms, ingeniously imagined bathrooms, and intriguing hallways and stairwells offer endless inspiration, while Scotto's engaging text gives readers a feel for the kinds of people who take on such a daunting yet satisfying challenge.

In the 19th century, numerous photographers chose the same motifs as Impressionist painters: the forest of Fontainebleau, the cliffs of Etretat or the modern metropolis of Paris. They, too, studied the changing light, seasons and weather conditions. From its inception, photographers pursued artistic ambitions, as evidenced by their experimentation with composition and perspective, by means of various technical procedures. Until the First World War, the relationship between photography and painting was characterized both by competition and mutual influence. The exhibition and catalogue examine these interactions and illuminate the development of the new medium from the 1850s to its establishment as an autonomous art form around 1900.
