This utterly charming tale relates the story of King Mortimer, a royal plagued by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder who only finds comfort and ease by surrounding himself with the number 5 — be it 5 knights, 5 moats or 5 points on his crown. One day he awakens to find that he has grown a sixth finger! Woe is he! His wizard is quick to suggest a remedy, but not one without risk. In a state of crisis, he takes advice from far and wide on how to achieve this cure. In turn, a jester, a gypsy, a professor and others present plans increasingly unlikely and complex. Driven to despair, epiphany is at last reached — perhaps his condition is not half so bad... Beautifully illustrated in full color and with wonderful rhyming verse, The King's 6th Finger will appeal to all ages.

Have you ever wondered how long it takes to digest chewing gum? What hiccups are for? Whether it's safe to fly with breast implants? Taking in everything from the outrageous (yes, Hitler was addicted to crystal meth) to the eye-watering (such as the renowned surgeon who accidentally cut off his patients left testicle) to the downright disgusting (like the cure for toothache used by the Egyptians involving dead mouse paste), this book proves that medical science is not for the faint-hearted, lily-livered or weak-stomached.

A modern day Downton Abbey
Over a twelve month period the author and his wife bought to an extremely proper and aristocratic household a down to earth mentality which confused and intrigued their employers. Age old ways tied this Kiwi pair in knots and caused sleepless nights but at best provided some of the funniest experiences of their lives.
Their exceedingly wealthy employers couldn't boil water or sweep leaves. The Laredos could, so a punt was taken to hire them by Mr and Mrs Worlingham who required everything to be picked up and put down for them.
Shoes had to be polished, clothes laid out and drinks poured. The Laredos acted as marriage counsellors, relationship consultants for their teenage daughters, truce negotiators for family feuds and issues concerning staff rivalry. Acting as go betweens and smoke screens became skills they never knew they had.
Aside from life at Chantborough Court there were also local village people who curried favour with this new domestic couple from down under hoping they would open doors to the 'Big House' that most villagers only dreamt of passing through. They became the subject of gossip, personality hang-ups and intrigue - learning to be discreet was everything. Ultimately friendships were forged that have held fast, but getting established and becoming accepted was often testy, frequently funny beyond words and ultimately too good to have missed.

Peter Morath has photographed and written this book as a sequel to his previous one “Christchurch, A Nostalgic Tribute”. Two chapters are retrospective, showing Lyttelton scenes from the past and some of the heritage buildings lost in the earthquakes. The main part of this book is contemporary though. It is full of recent photographs. They show us Banks Peninsula’s wonderful mix of scenery, history, homes and holiday havens, farming, wildlife and conservation areas, outdoor pursuits and tourist activities.

The Canterbury Society of Arts domin-ated the cultural life of Canterbury for nearly a century, and played a vital role in the development of New Zealand art. Whereas art societies are often assumed to be conservative and reactionary institutions that failed to nurture the work of younger or more radical artists, this fascinating and entertaining history reveals a different story. The CSA was formed in 1880 by Euro-pean settlers resolute in their vision to nurture serious New Zealand artistic talent. From the start, the institution emerged as a vital and sometimes uncompromisingly progressive arts organisation that had, over its life, a total of 2259 working members. For almost 100 years the CSA provided valued support for the arts, exhibiting the early work of generations of leading New Zealand artists, including Petrus van der Velden, Raymond McIntyre, Margaret Stoddart, Rhona Haszard, Frances Hodgkins, W. A. Sutton, Colin McCahon, Michael Smither, Neil Dawson, Andrew Drummond and Pauline Rhodes. Directors and committees came and went, numerous obstacles and controversies were encountered, yet the CSA secured Christchurch’s reputation as the artistic capital of New Zealand in the middle years of the 20th century. CSA: The Radical, the Reactionary and the Canterbury Society of Arts 1800–1996 invites readers to reconsider the history of the arts in New Zealand.
