Beyond The Pavilion : Reflections on a Life in Cricket

Beyond The Pavilion spans seventy years of social, regional and cultural history through the eyes of one of cricket’s earliest Test match wayfarers, Barry Knight. As a ten-year-old, Barry saw Don Bradman’s 1948 ‘Invincibles’ at Lord’s. His early days were spent playing street cricket in London’s East End, captaining his school against Eton College, and later captaining England Schoolboys. At the age of fifteen, he was recruited to play for Essex and went on to become one of England’s finest all-round cricketers. In this memoir, Barry reflects on his international playing career and his experiences touring India, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand in the 1960s. He recounts tours with Fred Trueman, Geoff Boycott, Ted Dexter, and Colin Cowdrey and playing against the era’s best Australian, Indian, Pakistani, and West Indian players. He also shares stories about life in London in the Swinging Sixties and his place in the D’Oliveira affair, and the anti-apartheid protests. After his retirement, Barry moved to Australia in the 1970s and became Australia’s first professional cricket coach mentoring and developing three Test match captains: Allan Border, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh. He also had a front-row seat in the development of World Series Cricket. The book includes endorsements from leading players, commentators and journalists, including Sir Garfield Sobers, Allan Border, Ian Chappell, Barry Richards, Geoffrey Boycott, Doug Walters and Sir Michael Parkinson. This sporting memoir is richly illustrated with photographs from Andrew Leeming’s and other private collections. Bind: hardback Pages: 256 Dimensions: 156 x 234 mm Publication Date: 14-08-2022 |

This book is about the information that is needed to catch fish but more importantly it is about adopting the right mind set to help us be more successful fly fishers. There are many factors to be considered when trying to catch trout on a fly, weather, state of the water, what the trout are feeding on - the list is endless. But having all this information does not ensure success as the final, but rarely recognised factor, how we use this information is paramount. How we use the information is determined by how we think and no two anglers think exactly the same. All the information is freely available yet some anglers consistently catch more fish than others and it is how they think that makes the difference. Clifford Glen Porter was the Invincibles captain. He was nicknamed “Offside Porter” because his anticipation was so accurate and his speed around the scrum so great that opponents insisted he must have been off side. Good referees could see he was not. Well, not always. The Invincibles won all thirty-two games in Britain, France and Canada. Mny of the 28 men in that “Second All Blacks” team are regarded s rugby legends now, a hundred years later : Cliff Porter as their leader. George Nepia said he was “the best captain I ever know” and he knew a few. Cliff Porter played forty-one games for the All Blacks. The phrase that crops up time and time again in reports of Porter’s play, is his “uncanny anticipation” - referring to his ability to predict how moves were going to develop, and to place himself in exactly the right place to take advantage. He was a superb player and one of the very great All Black captains. Bind: paperback Pages: 380 Dimensions: 148 x 210 mm Publication Date: 09-06-2022 |

A Day At The Races

From King Henry VIII to Queen Elizabeth II, via the introduction of the Classics, a duel at Ascot, the first steeplechase, a Derby Day fraud, a huge Cambridgeshire gamble, the desolation of Fred Archer, a thousand-mile walk around Newmarket Heath, the greatness of Ormonde and Sceptre, Man o' War's record-breaking runs, National Velvet and Emily Davison, to the brilliance of Lester Piggott, Tony McCoy and Frankel, Peter May has selected over one hundred days that encapsulate five hundred years of the Sport of Kings. His short, informative, easy-to-read essays bring to life racing's milestone events that set the nation on a different path, such as the 1913 Derby, and the sacrifices horseracing made to support the British military campaigns overseas. A host of anecdotes tell of the exploits of the racing fraternity and cast light on the psyche of those who were prepared to take on bets which, at today's rates, would stretch into millions. Sure to rekindle fond, and maybe distant, memories of the races and horses that once dominated the sporting section of the daily newspapers.
