Many New Zealand families were affected by the 1918 influenza pandemic. In the space of about six weeks, over 6400 Pakeha died and an estimated 2500 Maori. That equals nearly half the total of New Zealand soldiers killed in the First World War. Yet these were civilians, dying in the first month of peace. This was New Zealand's worst-ever public health disaster. The whole country seemed to shut down for several weeks in November 1918. Because the victims' bodies turned black when they died, many believed it was the plague. Could it happen again? The risk of another major influenza pandemic is even greater now, thanks to international jet travel. Global flu surveillance should give us better earning, and we now have anti-viral drugs and antibiotics to deal with the secondary pneumonia that was the real killer in 1918. But do we have the systems in place to deal with another massive health crisis? This book shows how we coped back in 1918 - the response of public health officials, how the sick were nursed, how thousands of convalescents were fed and the lessons learned that may still be useful today. It is an inspiring and fascinating story that all New Zealanders need to know about.

This colorful menagerie of yoga poses featuring animals will help kids take part in the age-old practice and enjoy yoga’s benefits in a fun and engaging way. Yoga reduces stress, increases the sense of wellbeing, and encourages mindfulness—and it can also be fun. This book features double-page spreads of 15 animal asanas—animals in yoga poses. Elsa Bahia’s charming illustrations demonstrate how to do each pose, while helpful texts explain the asanas’ health benefits and connections to their animal namesakes. Written with children in mind, the instructions to stretch like a dog, roar like a lion, move knees like butterfly wings, arch like a cat, jump like a frog, and more, give kids concrete images that will help them understand the yoga poses—and the freedom to be as silly and expressive as they want. This delightful introduction to yoga will get kids excited about the practice, and give their parents and teachers a reason to move right along with them.

Following his highly successful book, “Animal Kingdom”, Jim Naughten brings to life historic specimens of the human body in this peculiarly enthralling collection of stereoscopic photographs. Historically, stereoscopic photography was widely used in medicine as a teaching aid, so it seems fitting that Jim Naughten’s stereoscopic pictures of human specimens on display at the Vrolik Museum in Amsterdam transform science into art. With over 5,000 immaculately preserved objects, the Vrolik has one of the largest collections of anatomical specimens in the world. Naughten has selected 50 of the most striking examples for this book, including pathological specimens such as skeletons afflicted by rickets and other diseases of the bone; congenital malformations; and dissected heads. Many are photographed in their original wood and glass specimen cases, which lends them a haunting tone. Reproduced with stunning clarity, these transfixing images take the reader on a fascinating journey through the history of the study of anatomy, with the stereoscopic viewer permitting an immersive experience that is not possible with conventional photography.

Doctors in Denial : The forgotten women in the 'unfortunate experiment'

When Dr Ron Jones joined the staff of National Women’s Hospital in Auckland in 1973 as a junior obstetrician and gynaecologist, Professor Herbert Green’s study into the natural history of carcinoma in-situ of the cervix (CIS) – later called ‘the unfortunate experiment’ – had been in progress for seven years. By the mid-1960s there was almost universal agreement among gynaecologists and pathologists worldwide that CIS was a precursor of cancer, requiring complete removal. Green, however, believed otherwise, and embarked on a study of women with CIS, without their consent, that involved merely observing, rather than definitively treating them. Many women subsequently developed cancer and some died. In 1984 Jones and senior colleagues Dr Bill McIndoe and Dr Jock McLean published a scientific paper that exposed the truth, and the disastrous outcome of Green’s experiment. In a public inquiry in 1987 Judge Sylvia Cartwright observed that an unethical experiment had been carried out in large numbers of women for over 20 years. Since that time there have been attempts to cast Green’s work in a more generous light. This rewriting of history has spurred Ron Jones to set the record straight by telling his personal story: a story of the unnecessary suffering of countless women, a story of professional arrogance and misplaced loyalties, and a story of doctors in denial of the truth.
