Temple Basin Temple of Dreams
High above Arthur’s Pass, beyond the beech forest and the bluffs, lies Temple Basin — a place that has drawn skiers for nearly a century, not because it’s easy to reach, but because it isn’t.
From the days when Guy and Grace Butler cut the first winter tracks in the 1920s, skiing here has always been something earned by effort and shared through community.
When the Christchurch Ski Club built its first hut in 1933, every sheet of iron and every plank was carried by hand. That spirit of voluntary hard work never left. Rope tows, huts and even the goods lift were all created the same way — through long days, calloused hands and a deep love of the mountains.
Generations learned to ski and to work here, shaping a field that has always favoured determination over glamour. The snow changes, the technology changes, but the purpose remains: to climb, to ski, and to belong.
Temple Basin stands as a testament to what people can achieve together in the high country — a living tradition of effort, adventure and friendship in the mountains.
