The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 three-engine jet is one of the most distinctive wide-bodied aircraft and since the early 1970s has been operated by many airlines on medium- and long-distance routes throughout the world. Successfully flying passenger service for over 40 years, the DC-10 currently still flies for FedEx in an airfreight delivery role. Filled with design and construction information, background history, technical data, and rare images, this book describes the exciting story of this aviation legend as flown by such current and past airlines as Aeroflot, American, Delta, Eastern, KLM, Lufthansa, Northwest, Pan Am, Qantas, SAS, Swissair, United, and many others. Also, the US Air Force has been flying the KC-10 Extender aerial-refueling tanker variant since the early 1980s. Coverage of the follow-on MD-11 series of aircraft is also included.

World War I witnessed unprecedented growth and innovation in aircraft design, construction, and as the war progressed - mass production. Each country generated its own innovations sometimes in surprising ways - Albatros Fokker, Pfalz, and Junkers in Germany and Nieuport, Spad, Sopwith and Bristol in France and Britain. This book focuses on the British approach to fighter design, construction, and mass production. Initially the French led the way in Allied fighter development with their Bleriot trainers then nimble Nieuport Scouts - culminating with the powerful, fast gun platforms as exemplified by the Spads. The Spads had a major drawback however, in that they were difficult and counter-intuitive to fix in the field. The British developed fighters in a very different way; Tommy Sopwith had a distinctive approach to fighter design that relied on lightly loaded wings and simple functional box-girder fuselages. His Camel was revolutionary as it combined all the weight well forward; enabling the Camel to turn very quickly - but also making it an unforgiving fighter for the inexperienced. The Royal Aircraft Factory's SE5a represented another leap forward with its comfortable cockpit, modern instrumentation, and inline engine - clearly influenced by both Spads and German aircraft. Each manufacturer and design team vied for the upper hand and deftly and quickly appropriated good ideas from other companies - be they friend or foe. Developments in tactics and deployment also influenced design - from the early reconnaissance planes, to turn fighters, finally planes that relied upon formation tactics, speed, and firepower. Advances were so great that the postwar industry seemed bland by comparison.

This is the second volume in a trilogy of books that look in depth at the history of David Brown tractors, and a remarkable record of a proud company during what is probably the greatest period of its history. Part Two focuses on the period during which the motto of this celebrated Yorkshire company was "Mechanising the world's farms". It was no idle boast, as this book explains - the company expanded its product line to embrace a host of different models, becoming a serious contender on the global market. The famous Cropmaster remained in production until 1953, but the exciting new developments that followed included the six-cylinder 50D, the innovative rowcrop 2D and a range of crawlers and industrial tractors. Diversifying still further, David Brown added the old-established firm of Harrison, McGregor & Guest, together with its range of Albion implements, to its portfolio in 1955. The early 1960s saw the arrival of the Implematic range before the era of red David Brown tractors came to an end in 1964. This highly illustrated book is the result of many years of meticulous research during which time the author has met and interviewed many of David Brown's key personnel including directors, engineers and sales people. Many of the illustrations are taken from David Brown's own archives and will not have been seen before.

The General Dynamics F-111 was one of aviation history's most promising planes when it came out in the early 1960s. Despite a rocky service career, political changes in how the military acquired its weaponry, and the addition of too much new technology, the plane provided a credible frontline deterrent in the Cold War era and was used to great effect in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. Many of the challenges faced by putting the F-111with all of its new systemsinto service are now accepted as a normal outfit in modern fighter aircraft. Although the Navy did not accept the F-111B model, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat development program was significantly assisted by prior radar and missile system testing on the F-111B airframe. The F-111 was a hugely powerful aircraft and carried devastating weaponry, but was phased out by the USAF in the mid-90s, largely due to crippling maintenance costs. The aircraft remained in Australian service until 2010.

Having recorded in pen and ink the Fishing Boats of Scotland which she loves, Gloria Wilson here focusses her attention on the Peterhead yard of Richard Irvin & Sons, and the wooden, cruiser sterned fishing boats for which it became renowned in the second half of the twentieth century. Almost one hundred of her own photographs accompany her account of the boats and the people who made up a distinctive and now disappearing maritime culture. As the naval architect and boatbuilder Paul Gartside writes in his Foreword: Gloria Wilson truly belongs in the tradition of the folklorists—individuals moved initially by the discovery of beauty in the commonplace who are then compelled to understand and record what they find… One hopes her example will spur others to similar effort, for the capturing of culture and local knowledge before it slips away is always a noble pursuit.

In four dozen meticulous, informative and annotated drawings Gloria Wilson has recorded, both afloat and ashore, the functional beauty of the fishing boat in both timber and steel—mainly of north-east Scotland (with a few craft from Yorkshire, where the artist now lives). A number of vessels were victims of fisheries legislation which mandated not only their decommissioning, but their destruction. “Kipperman” Mike Smylie, co-founder of the 40+ Fishing Boat Association, editor of Fishing Boats, and champion of Britain’s fishing heritage, has contributed a Foreword. Gloria Wilson was born in Surrey but spent her childhood in the Yorkshire fishing village of Staithes. She studied at Durham University under Victor Pasmore and Kenneth Rowntree and gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. She has written eight books on fishing craft of the British Isles, and has written extensively for maritime journals including Classic Boat, Fishing News, and Maritime Life and Traditions. Gloria lived in Scotland for some years, but now lives and works in the north-east of England.

Deep in southern latitudes, in a desolate corner of Cumberland Bay on the east coast of the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, hard by the rotting quays of the abandoned whaling station of Grytviken and almost within a stone’s throw of the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton, lie three forsaken steam ships: rusting remnants of our industrial past, unique survivals from a vanished age of steam at sea. One of these ships is Viola, the sole surviving Hull steam trawler from the huge fleet which put 'fish & chips' on Britain's plates more than a hundred years ago. In this absorbing account, maritime historians Robb Robinson and Ian Hart describe her ancestry and origins in the Victorian and Edwardian North Sea fishery—vividly depicting life for her crew in the most dangerous industry of its time; they record her Great War service as a U-boat hunter—one of the many merchant vessels largely unsung for their contribution, and often sacrifice, in wartime; and they recount her subsequent career hunting whales off West Africa, then later sealing and exploration work in the South Atlantic, before her final abandonment in South Georgia. Here she became quarry for the infamous Argentine scrap metal expedition of 1982, in the initiating action of the Falklands War. This improbable yet true story of a humble working vessel and those involved with her is a highly readable work of social, as well as maritime, history.

“Form follows function,” as it has been said; when that form enters the realm of Art, we have something timelessly memorable.—Iain Oughtred Albert Strange (1855-1917) was an accomplished artist, teacher, yacht designer, sailor, and writer, and he left his indelible mark on all these fields of activity, with levels of accomplishment, modesty and humour which have endeared him to so many, from his own lifetime to the present day. In this book, first published in 1990 by The Albert Strange Association and long out of print, John Leather provides a biography of Strange and a commentary on many of his designs. The book also includes: Drawings of 27 yacht designs; an appreciation of Strange the artist; a selection of his cruising yarns reproduced in facsimile from The Yachting Monthly of a century and more ago; an updated selection of recently located images of his paintings; and photographs of Strange yachts afloat today. This is the first of two volumes originated by the Albert Strange Association and to be updated and re-issued by Lodestar Books, and it deserves a place on the bookshelves of anyone who appreciates the design and enjoyment of the classic British cruising yacht, and the 'complete' example of humanity represented by Albert Strange.

The third of George Millar’s masterful sailing and travel narratives to be republished many decades after their original appearance. On the face of it, this voyage from Lymington to the Riviera should not be noteworthy, but this is a world recovering from war, and the author a man ‘incapable of writing a dull sentence’. As Peter Bruce states in his Introduction, “One soon becomes captivated, as one always is, by George’s unusually acute powers of observation and his ability to ascertain and record exactly what was going on at every stop… George Millar’s accounts of his adventures are always like a box of jewels each giving dazzling pleasure and glorious entertainment, and never better than in this deservedly revived book.” George Millar DSO, MC (1910-2005) read architecture at Cambridge. He became a journalist, first on the Daily Telegraph, then as Paris correspondent for the Daily Express. During the war he joined the Rifle Brigade, was captured in North Africa, escaped from a German POW camp and returned to England via occupied France and the Pyrenees, later recording these events in Horned Pigeon (1946). He returned to France as an SOE agent to work alongside the Resistance, an experience he described in Maquis (1945), and for which he was awarded both the Legion d’Honneur and the Croix de Guerre. After the war Millar and his wife Isabel farmed in Dorset, and made a number of voyages under sail in Baltic and European waters, and the Mediterranean. Three of these were recorded in books: Isabel and the Sea, Oyster River (both reissued in recent years by Dovecote Press) and A White Boat from England.
