A fascinating and disturbing dystopian vision from a neglected sci-fi master, imagining an all too terrifying alternate ending to World War I and its implications for the human raceThe year is 2041. Since the end of WWI, Berlin has been an enormous subterranean city, home to 300 million citizens who have never seen the sun, and presided over by the autocratic Hohenzollern dynasty. Every aspect of life is regimented; from controlled rations that are issued on the basis of work-for-food, to a press that works exclusively under the auspices of the Information Service. Christianity has been abolished and all breeding is carried out on the basis of strict eugenic principles. Lyman De Forrest, an American chemist, discovers a way of neutralizing Berlin's defenses and, assuming the identity of a dead German man, enters the city to discover its hidden truths. The first outsider for decades to enter the forbidden metropolis, he is horrified to find a society where women are kept in isolation for breeding or the pleasuring of high status men. Can De Forrest escape this living tomb? Published shortly after the end of WWI, this tremendous example of early dystopian science fiction is thought to have been the inspiration behind Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

A unique civilian's eye-view of World War I, depicting, through heartfelt letters from an American woman, a fascinating before and after picture of a French community in disarray"What looked impossible is evidently coming to pass . . . I silently returned to my garden and sat down. War again! This time war was close by--not war about which one can read, as one reads it in the newspapers, as you will read it in the States, far away from it, but war right here--if the Germans can cross the frontier.""A Hilltop on the Marne" is a collection of letters written by Mildred Aldrich, an American expatriate who had bought a country farmhouse near Paris in the spring of 1914. Writing to her friends back home, she describes her idyllic life in Huiry, the minutiae of her farmhouse and her daily life. Ignoring the panicked pleadings of friends that she return to the U.S. As the political situation in Europe darkens, Aldrich stands firm in her decision to stay in France and her village, come what may. As war breaks out she looks out over Marne valley at the armies moving, hears the cannonade in the distance and watches as soldiers of all nations march down the lanes in turn. Aldrich's narrative goes on to describe the subsequent events of the war until America's entry into the fray and, returning to her narrative after the war, she described the process of rebuilding local life.

Tibet was not just on the horizon, it capped it. Four thousand metres above this city was a country of stone and ice, and, even though it was officially closed, there was still a way in.

A compelling and unforgettable encounter on the roof of the world…

Hoping to reach Tibet after a twenty-year obsession, Charlie Carroll travelled to China. Contending with Chinese bureaucracy, unforgiving terrain and sickness-inducing altitude, Charlie experienced twenty-first-century Tibet in all its heartbreaking beauty.

Tibetan-born Lobsang fled the volatile region over the Himalayas, on foot, as a child in 1989. An exile in Nepal, then a student in India, he was called back to Tibet by love. At the end of the road known as the Friendship Highway, he met Charlie and recounted his extraordinary life story, exemplifying the hardship, resilience and hope of modern Tibetan life.

The third volume in a series on automotive culture, Car Design Asia continues and concludes the narrative that has already explored Europe and America. Having started in the 1950s as a smaller player, compared to Europe and the United States, East Asia’s automobile industry has since consistently grown, developing into the most dynamic global creative force in the process. At the forefront of technology and design, cars from Japan today include some of the most commercially successful automobiles ever built, as well as a great many of the odd, the whimsical, and the spectacular kind. From the cute, microscopic Kei cars, through iconic sports cars to innovative crossover vehicles: Like a well-kept secret, many East Asian brands and models still remain concealed from Western eyes and ears—and put an end to the myth of the East copying the West. Equally mysterious are the people behind these automotive legends. Seemingly a logical consequence of a long-term strategy is a global automotive fashion, at once of purely Asian breed, yet rooted in global design trends, originating from the Chinese, South Korean, and Japanese manufacturers. Enriched by hundreds of original photographs and pointing out the links among the East Asian cars and the cultures they respectively originated from, this volume bridges the gap between fascinating heritage and a promising future.

The Prix Pictet has rapidly established itself as the world’s leading prize in photography and sustainability. The award aims to uncover outstanding photography that confronts the most pressing social and environmental challenges of today. The theme of the fifth cycle and this volume is “Consumption.” Consumption is a multi-faceted theme, rich with creative potential. We are all consumers. We have invented new forms of building, industrial production, farming, and energy. We have emptied the seas and ravaged the land in our relentless drive to satisfy our unquenchable desires. We have sustained this through the sometimes thoughtless exploitation of the world’s poorest people. This book will showcase photographs of high artistic quality that also bear powerful messages about global sustainability

As a result of their actions such as the “Punk Prayer” in Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral and their subsequent trials, the girls of Pussy Riot were transformed into icons of protest. The images of the principal members, Nadezda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, were seen all around the world before the two disappeared for two years into Russian prison camps. Immediately after their release, the successful Dutch entrepreneur and avid photographer Bert Verwelius contacted the two women, setting into motion what was to be an extraordinary photo shoot: using the activists’ stories and sketches of the prison camp, he depicted their living and working conditions there as an impressive picture series. Yet Bert Verwelius also shows us a very different, hidden side to the two young women in this book, his first publication. With his sensitive portraits, he captures the open and loveable nature of Nadezda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina—not to mention their beauty.
