Boots 'n' All is a compelling read that continues in the footsteps of the popular first book by author Tony Walsh, The Black Singlet Brigade.
From the valleys of Te Urewera to the hinterlands of the South Island, and across to the red, dusty lands of Australia, these stories weave through a landscape of adventure and amusement, populated by larger-than-life characters. These were men and women who lived whole-heartedly their back-country existence and were ready to jump into ;life at any moment, boots and all.
Within the chapters of this book - from the hilarious "I'm Shot" to the poignant "Epitaph to a Friend" - a tale unfolds; a record of one man's hunting adventures and encounters with some real but unusual people in the remoter parts of New Zealand.

In July 1940, Erich Fischer found himself in Liverpool being herded onto a British transport ship bound for Australia, along with 2,500 other men. Conditions on board were horrific, with men locked below decks with overflowing latrines and only seawater to clean themselves. Separated from family, friends and removed from any semblance of a normal life, Erich is unsure whether he will ever see wife and child again. Erica Fischer's Over the Ocean tells the extraordinary story of her own parents and at the same time sheds light on a little-known and little-discussed chapter in British history. Fischer's parents met in Austria in the early 1930s. Her mother, Irka, was a Polish Jew and her father, Erich, was a Viennese lapsed Catholic. Faced with growing unrest in Europe, Irka fled to the United Kingdom in 1938, her husband followed a year later. However at the outbreak of war, Erich had been arrested as an 'enemy alien', and having been interned was deported to the opposite side of the world.Faced with unimaginable hardships, the deportees banded together in solidarity to face their new life in Australia and Erich was, against the odds, able to make contact with Irka and their letters established a lifeline between continents. Over the Ocean is an astonishing true tale dealing with an unexposed and unexplored period in British history but also a story of the resilience of love.

The original landmark story of the gladiator Spartacus, a masterpiece of vivid storytelling full of adventure, suspense, cruelty, and romantic intrigueRome, 73 BC. Kleon, a Greek slave, wakes early, cuts his master's throat, and flees south by a back road, clutching a copy of Plato's "Republic." His destination is Capua, where he hopes to join the burgeoning rebel army of Spartacus, an escaped gladiator. So begins the definitive telling of one of the most famous stories in history. Spartacus and his companions, having defeated every Roman force sent against them, are plundering the countryside and gathering to their ranks thousands of fugitives, brigands, and itinerants. They seek to create a new world, one where men are not owner and owned. But they must first escape Italy, and the vengeful Roman legions already marshalling against them. Brutal and uncompromising in its depiction of the ancient world, "Spartacus" masterfully evokes the violence, hope, and despair of the war that shook Rome to its very foundations.

The third book in the Little Women quartet sees headstrong Jo, now grown-up and married, setting up a school with all the rewards and troubles that followAfter her marriage to Professor Friedrich Bhaer, Jo uses the money from her inheritance from Aunt March to set up a school at Plumfield. Their latest arrival is Nat Blake, a timid orphan boy whose life so far has been spent playing the violin to make money on the streets. Nat joins the 10 other children at the school--a gang made up of neglected children, orphans, and also Meg's twin boy and girl. The touching friendship and camaraderie between the group is expertly described. The peaceful equilibrium of the school is troubled though when Nat introduces Dan to the mix--the latter then leads the boys into experimenting with drinking, smoking, fighting, and playing cards. Moving and poignant, "Little Men" is far from saccharine and emotions run high throughout, particularly with the death of a prominent character towards the end of the tale.
