No other magazine pushed the boundaries of skateboarding and pop culture like Big Brother, the raunchiest, rowdiest magazine to come out of the 1990s. Constantly at the center of much-deserved controversy, the rag has been decried as pornography, bought and unexpectedly dropped by Larry Flynt of the Hustler empire, and credited as the genesis of the Jackass universe; it was also the champion of unknown skaters and featured some of today’s biggest names in skate culture when they were just children. Now author Sean Cliver puts a bow on the publication with The Big Brother Book, a collection of covers and spreads from every issue of the notorious publication. Featuring high-quality scans of the magazine itself — no production or layout files remain in existence — with just enough text to explain what’s going on and choice quotes from each issue, this book makes it easy as well as fun to stoop to Big Brother’s level. The Big Brother Book contains adult content and is recommended for ages 18 and up.

Skateboard graphics took a quantum leap in offensive potential after the sport was reborn aesthetically and otherwise in the ’90s. Artists such as Marc McKee, Todd Francis, Mike Hill, Michael Sieben, Ed Templeton, Sean Cliver, Moish Brenman, Fos, Ben Horton, Alyasha Owerka-Moore, Eli Morgan Gesner, Jeremy Fish, Brice Raysseguier, Johnny “Mojo” Munnerlyn, Alex Kramer, Todd Bratrud, Winston Tseng and others brought dark humor and politically incorrect topics to the forefront of their illustrations. These artists intended not just to decorate and sell skateboards, but also to raise serious issues and skewer values, deliberately evoking reactions from viewers. Agents Provocateurs asks new questions of this boundary-pushing artistic genre and its place over the years. Did it save skateboarding? Is it still possible to address such controversial topics twenty years later? What’s left once all the envelopes have been pushed? These 100 boards and the artists behind them will form a clearer picture.

In 1985, Berkeley-based graphic design company Emigre, the publisher of the legendary design magazine of the same name, launched one of the first independent digital type foundries to explore the new design possibilities offered by the MacIntosh computer. To announce each of their new typeface releases, Emigre published small booklets displaying the virtues of the fonts and revealing the processes used to design them. By creating specific contexts, many of these so called “type specimens” went beyond being simple sales tools. In fact the Emigre booklets were meant to be enjoyed as much for the typefaces as for their esoteric content. Emigre broke rules and raised eyebrows, winning them both world-wide acclaim and much criticism. Ultimately, Emigre’s typefaces came to define an era. They were one of the first digital type foundries to sell typefaces online, and they created the model for hundreds of small foundries who followed in their footsteps. Five of Emigre’s digital typefaces were included in MoMAs permanent design collection. The type specimens featured in this book are a selection of some of Emigre’s most memorable productions of the past 30 years.
