Throughout his life photographer Jim Naughten has been fascinated with the natural world. As a child, he collected fossils he found near his home in Dover. Now a renowned photographer, Naughten has started to experiment with stereography and has turned to his boyhood interest, gaining access to the archives of some of the world's most prestigious natural history museums. This gorgeously produced book contains fifty images of marine life, reptiles, mammals, birds and primates photographed expressly for viewing through a stereoscope, which is included with the book. Stereoscopy was invented in 1839 to study and explain binocular vision. Having two eyes allows humans to determine distance and depth and stereoscopy shows a left- and right-eye view from a slightly different angle, as we see things in day-to-day life. Looking through the stereo viewer, readers will see the specimens as three-dimensional objects. As the images jump off the page, their incredible details become apparent-delicate bat wings, the spiraling skeleton of a python, the almost mythic form of a leafy sea dragon.A foreword by Martin Barnes of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London offers an assessment of the work while essays on the specimens themselves and the history of stereoscopy provide rich background to this photographic technology, and to Naughten's achievement in bringing to life a world that seamlessly melds the past and present.

Drawn from the extensive holdings of the Staatliche Museen in Berlin, this collection of jewellery through the ages links cultures and eras to show how the design, wearing, and collecting of personal adornment has evolved over the ages. They range from classic items such as necklaces, rings and earrings to less common items with origins in non-European cultures. The book features jewellery ranging from the splendid crowns of ancient Greece, gold earrings from Babylon and jewelled collars worn by 13th-century Islamic royalty to more modern pieces such as those contained in the imperial collection of Queen Louise of Prussia, Art Nouveau jewellery designed by Rene Lalique, and work by contemporary designers. This chronologically arranged survey includes numerous brief essays and nearly 400 illustrations with detailed captions, making it an ideal reference for anyone interested in cultural history, the history of jewellery, or the art and craft of jewellery making.

With the epic blockbuster film Dunkirk, to be released in July 2017, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring, amongst others, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance, this reissue has never been more timely. 'Where is the RAF?' was the oft-quoted question asked by soldiers waiting on the beach at Dunkirk, to where they had retreated following the German blitzkrieg through northern France, and where they were now being pounded by the Luftwaffe. The air forces were there, as Norman Franks proves, detailing the outstanding achievements of the Allied pilots who fought, using outmoded tactics, against enemy pilots who had earlier had easy victories over the Polish, Dutch and Belgian air forces. The RAF's achievement reminds us just how close Britain came to disaster in June 1940.

A unique cultural history of travel and tourism in the 19th and 20th centuries This volume will awaken feelings of both nostalgia and wanderlust  Full of historic photographs that will amaze and delight   Relax by the ocean or head to the mountains? This vacation planning debate-starter is actually a fairly recent invention. To people of an earlier era, both options seemed unappealing and nearly impossible to visit. It wasn’t until railroads came along that remote areas  became accessible, making travel agency founder, Thomas Cook, the inventor of modern tourism as well. Fishing villages turned into swanky beach resorts, out-of-the-way mountain hamlets became hot destinations for hikers and skiers, and humble inns blossomed into grand hotels. Nostalgic Journeys takes you on an unforgettable trip through the last two centuries: ride the Orient Express to the Middle East, cross the Atlantic on an enormous steamship, follow Route 66 through the USA, or break through the sound barrier on the Concorde. Paging through this volume will remind you that traveling was and can be more than just sitting in traffic or enduring security checks. Travel can also be a stylish and sometimes adventurous way to experience the world and return home forever changed by exotic sights and sounds. Bon voyage!

Rose Taylor, Nee Broughton was born on the West Coast in 1899. In the Grey Valley between Greymouth and Reefton her father had cleared land and made a farm. Rose lived her last fifty years in Wellington. Her house in Kelburn catered for humble and distinguished alike - among them an opium addict, pacifists, musicians, philosophers, friends, family and neighbours. Many returned again and again, for cups of tea, for meals or to stay. She could never resist the challenge of a journey, in New Zealand or abroad. Nevertheless, like her four sisters, Rose was always a Coast girl at heart.
