Helmut Newton was in his sixties and already a well-established photographer when he and his wife moved to the French Riviera. At an age when many people would consider retirement, Newton instead plunged headfirst into one of the most prolific and liberating stages of his career. The city of Monaco was the perfect backdrop for his fashion photography, and it also provided him with a wealth of subjects for his famous portraits, including the stars of the Ballet de Monte-Carlo and the Princely Family. And it was in Monaco that Newton finally tried his hand at landscapes. While this volume focuses primarily on the years 1981 to 2004, it also looks at Newton's historic links with the Cote d'Azur and the area around Bordighera, Italy. There are essays by a range of experts in photography, film, and art and three interviews, including one with Paloma Picasso. In these remarkable photographs readers will discover the French Riviera through Newton's fascinated, slightly ironic lens: a way of life characterized by ease and elegance; a world dominated by appearance and superficiality; and a veritable living theater, in which he was both actor and privileged member of the audience.

Following World War II, Western painting went in completely new directions. A young generation of artists turned their backs on the dominant styles of the interwar period: Instead of figurative representation or geometric abstraction, painters in the orbit of Abstract Expressionism in the US and Art Informel in Western Europe pursued a radically impulsive approach to form, color, and material. As an expression of individual freedom, the spontaneous artistic gesture gained symbolic significance. Large-scale color-field compositions created a meditative space for ruminating the fundamental questions of human existence. The exhibition and catalogue examine the two sister movements against the background of a vibrant transatlantic exchange, from the 1940s through to the end of the Cold War. This lavishly illustrated volume brings together works by more than 50 artists, amongst them Alberto Burri, Jean Dubuffet, Helen Frankenthaler, K. O. Goetz, Franz Kline, Lee Krasner, Georges Mathieu, Joan Mitchell, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Judit Reigl, Mark Rothko, Hedda Sterne, Clyfford Still, and Jack Tworkov.

As a troubled teenager, Carlos Acosta was whisked off the streets of his native Havana and enrolled in the Cuban national ballet. From that time on he has emerged as one of the most influential dancers of the twenty-first century. Throughout his career, Acosta has striven to shine an international light on his homeland’s rich cultural traditions, while also exposing Cuba to choreographic innovations happening around the globe. With this aim, Acosta established ACOSTA DANZA in 2015. More than five years later the troupe continues to perform to rapturous accolades, both for the exceptional quality of its Cuban dancers and for its mission to highlight Cuban-influenced music and set design. Filled with more than one hundred photographs, many never-before-published, this book gives voice to the astonishingly diverse collection of dancers and choreographers, whose sensuous vitality and technical skill jump off the page—their experiences on and off the stage, their dreams and strategies, their emotions and challenges. In a deeply personal interview, Acosta himself shares a vision for giving young Cuban dancers the opportunities to express themselves creatively, and to give back to a country and community that gave so much to him.

From his boyhood days spent drawing compulsively through his tragic death, the trajectory of Keith Haring's life is a story of incredible achievement, luck, opportunity, and extraordinary commitment. This graphic novel looks at every stage of that life, exploring his early influences, the roots of his activism, and his close friendships with other artist contemporaries. It shows readers what it was like to be part of New York City's vibrant downtown art scene in the 1980s-the nightclubs, art openings, the rise of hip-hop-and how world events, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall; the escalation of the nuclear arms race; apartheid; and the dawn of the climate crisis played into his work. They'll learn how Haring's own battle with AIDS fueled his advocacy for education and research, and they'll get to know the figures who were most influential to his work- from Warhol to Basquiat, Fab Five Freddy to Madonna. Packed with key cultural reference points as well as the artist's own reflections, this graphic biography makes for compulsive, eye-opening reading.

Told in classic comic-book form, this graphic biography invites a new audience to learn about Banksy-and uses a pitch-perfect medium to convey the artist's message that art is for the people. Banksy is arguably the most well-known street artist of all time. But we don't actually know who he is. This is just one of many contradictions that are addressed in this enormously compelling graphic biography. When two young Londoners are caught spray-painting graffiti on a city wall, they get to know each other while detained by the police. After they are released, they decide to make a film of Banksy's life, tracing the arc of his career as they travel through the streets of London. Readers will learn not only of Banksy's politically charged art and the causes he championed, but also of its worldwide dissemination, museum exhibitions, and record-breaking auctions. While readers may not learn Banksy's true identity, this uniquely graphic form of storytelling communicates the artist's belief that art is for everyone, speaks to everyone, and is owned by everyone.

Internationally renowned dealer and market expert Michael Findlay offers a lively and authoritative look at the financial and emotional value of art throughout history. In this newly revised, updated, and generously illustrated edition Findlay draws on a half-century in the business and a passion for great art to question and redefine what we mean by "value," addressing developments in this conversation since the book was first published in 2012: the rise of NFTs and digital art; the auction house as theatre; the pressing relationship between art and society's fraught political landscape; and the impact of the pandemic. With style and wry wit, Findlay demystifies how art is bought and sold while also constantly looking beyond sales figures to emphasize the primacy of art's essential, noncommercial worth. Coloring his account with wise advice, insider anecdotes involving scoundrels and scams, stories of celebrity collectors, and remarkable discoveries, Findlay has distilled a lifetime's experience in this indispensable guide, now updated for today's sophisticated and discerning audience.

The real history of photography is a vast collection of inter- connected stories stretching from East Asia to West Africa, from New Zealand to Uzbekistan. It parallels acknowledged greats with forgotten masters, and lesser-known works with regional champions. It is a complex interplay of fine art, scientific, anthropological, documentary, and amateur traditions forged by women and men alike. Drawn from the extraordinary Solander Collection, this pioneering, alternative history of photography is based on principles of diversity and democracy, allowing famous works to be seen with fresh eyes, and giving more obscure works the platform they deserve. Images by Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Man Ray, Ansel Adams, and Edward Weston are seen alongside those of Helen Stuart and John Lindt, early, self- trained practitioners Lady Augusta Mostyn and Major Francis Greeley, and African studio photographers Sanle Sory, Michel Kameni, and Malick Sidibe. It contains many rarities and "firsts" and spans photography's early decades with linchpin works by Sir John Herschel, William Henry Fox Talbot, Hippolyte Bayard, and Julia Margaret Cameron. Contemporary in outlook, visually captivating, and with contributions from leading curators and photo historians, this book will prove essential reading for those looking for an introduction to the field, as well as informed readers looking for more complete knowledge.
